Resumen

El trascendental rol del calcio en la función miocárdica fue reconocido hace ciento cuarenta años por el médico y fisiólogo británico Sidney Ringer (1835-1910), el cual es recordado por la mayoría de los miembros del equipo de salud por ser quien dio origen a la solución epónima, cuyo descubrimiento presentó características muy singulares. No obstante, hay otros aspectos menos patentes de su vida laboral como también sobre su biografía, dignos de considerar.

El Dr. Ringer vivió en el Londres victoriano, una época de importantes cambios, destacando como un pionero de la farmacología. El rol de la serendipia en su investigación científica le permitió aprovechar al máximo la oportunidad que se le había brindado y a su vez nos posibilitó conocer sus notables rasgos de minuciosidad, persistencia y perspicacia.

Este artículo revisa brevemente la carrera de Ringer y explora el contexto intelectual y científico en el que sus importantes contribuciones fueron efectuadas.
